Procrastination is the art of putting things off until tomorrow, and there is no need to tell you how good I am at that. Even the idea of this topic came up after long hours spending doing nothing. à «Nothing à » isnââ¬â¢t really the exact word, because the procrastinator always find something more appealing and stupid in most cases than what he or she should actually do. While thinking about a topic for this column, I felt the sudden need to clean up my room. On the other hand, it simply means that we see things as we are. Why could not we see things as they are instead as we are? Therefore, how can we be sure that what we perceive now is the way it is supposed to be? The reasons of why this happened because of the ways of knowing. There are four ways of knowing that can misled our seeing and understanding of the things which are perception, reason, emotion and language. But however without them, we cannot create knowledge of reality and truth because brain does not have a direct contact to the real world. It is somehow these ways of knowing do help us to see and understand things as they are but just to a certain extent. Therefore, in this essay, I intend to discuss to what extent we see and understand things not as they are but as we are. Language is a conventional code of symbols that allows a sender to formulate a message that can be understood by a receiver. How we see things is strongly influenced by our language and our seeing also makes influence on our thinking. Therefore, our thinking cannot be separated from our language and even we could say that our language limits our thinking. According to the Linguistic Relativity Theory, an individuals nature language determines the way the individual thinks and perceives the world which also can bewitch the intelligencesà [2]à . One example is infinite monkey theorem. This theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a particularly chosen text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeareà [3]à . People always misinterpret by the true meaning of this theorem (by linguistic and perception). With the picture of the chimpanzee typing a typewriter will cause people to regard and value it as an art. People may have thought that the picture of the chimpanzee is the same as the Cassius Marcellus Coolidges work of his paintings in the dogs playing pokerà [4]à genre. But the truth is the picture and the theorem is all about Mathematics that illustrates the perils of reasoning about infinity by thinking a vast but finite number and vice versa From the context, the words of almost surely is a mathematical term with precise meaning and the monkey is not an actual monkey but it is a metaphor for an abstract devices that produces a random sequences of letters ad infinitum. At first we really do see it not as the theorem but instead as the art of the monkey. It is because the sense of our sight which is perception and the language gi ve us false idea of what the theorem really is. Hence, the language itself will limit our seeing and understanding things not as they are but as we are. Unless we already study about the theorem beforehand, we will know what the picture of chimpanzee and the context of the sentence of the theorem are trying to convey the meaning. So, we will see the theorem as it is but not as we are. This implies that many words have no true meaning; rather they have so many different meanings which can only be appreciated in context. Therefore, we must be aware of the true meaning to be able to use a word accurately because word can mean so many things in so many situations that require us to perceive it based on our knowledge and experiences which are often being limited by our senses. So, one must understand the context, or background, in which a word is used to have a grasp on the meaning of the word itself. Understanding the context of a word is nearly as important as an understanding of the word itself, as the situation controls to a degree how the word will be used.The result would be language which is far more clear, precise, and less mislea ding, or bewitching. When language free of most problems it would make it an even greater tool and developing better understanding and knowledge through this communication, ultimately it would help us to see things as they are. Moving on to science, I believe there is always a new paradigm to it due to scientists see things as (we are) where suppose they should have see things as they are. Why does paradigm changes from time to time? Does paradigm occur because of we (scientists) see and understand things not as they are but as we are (scientists)? According to the historian of science, Thomas Kuhn, paradigm is the word refers to the set of practices that defines a scientific discipline at any particular period of time.à [5]à In other words, scientists have always work based on their paradigm which is a normal science of that particular scientific community. Normal science is an assumption (might be deceived by the perception, emotion and reasoning) that the scientific community knows what the world is like. So, scientists will adjust and modify their paradigm if falsifications become apparent but consistently stay within it. Eventually, there comes a point when new observations are no longer compatible with the existing paradigms. From here the revolution occurs and new paradigm will replace the old one. All this is happening because the paradigm itself is a human construct and all the scientific observations are made by using our human senses, human intelligences and human rationality which the ways of knowing are necessary in these processes. However, these ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reasoning) that exist among scientists can limit their capabilities to see things as they are. Therefore, scientists will always come about with new ideas, assumptions and theory that cause the amendments of the paradigm. To further up, according to Kuhns book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutionsà [6]à , he said that the perception of the world depends on how the percipient conceives the world where two scientists who witness the same phenomenon and are steeped in two radically different theories will see two different things. One of the examples is the ideas of the Charles Darwin and Abbot Gregor Johann Mendel about the inherited characteristics from two parents into their childà [7]à . Darwin suggested that the characteristics of the mother and father were blended to produce a child who looks similar to both. Abbot Gregor Johann Mendel developed theories over seven years by studying and testing pea plants. In the 1930s, the Mendels conjectures, The Law of Segregation and the Law of Independent Assortment were found correct after the genetics and research into inheriting traits began to be investigated. On the other hand, Darwins speculations of the blending theory only pervaded into the first offspring of two parents but not with the characteristics which Darwin could not explain, but Mendel did. This shows that the two scientists have two different theories on the same phenomenon because of the perception, emotion and reasoning are different to each other. But this paradigm could not be a promising in the future since paradigm always changing based on human being observations and assumptions that are mainly seize by our ways of knowing. The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool. à (Richard Feynman, American theoretical physicist, 1918-1988)à [8]à Even though sciences always give us the areas of uncertainty, but without sciences we would not be able to know the world. We could not see the things as they are without the existence of science. Whatever inadequacies as a way-of-knowing science may have are inadequacies caused by the fact that it is a human construct but there is no way-of-knowing created by humans will ever be entirely reliable, entirely precise, and entirely objective. The way we develop our scientific knowledge, science as a way-of-knowing is pragmatic. Thus, it must be consider as reliable, precise and objective. On the other hand, there is a scientist who models their claim on science for good reason. It also can be the most reliable way-of-knowing and be the best justified true belief if we are limiting ours way-of-knowing to the physical and world around us. Without our realisation, there is an absolute way-of-knowing in which justification is absolutely independent of observation. Plus, there is also an obs ervation that requires our justification that based on our way-of-knowing solely. Hence, the thing that we see and understand may do not need us to see them as they are but as we are. In conclusion, we do see things as we are but not as they are but just to a certain extent. All the areas of knowledge will help us to see and understand things more as they are but not as we are. Although there is some part that we as a human are not capable of seeing and understanding the thing as they are since our ways of knowledge can be deceiving but we can be guided by any theories in Mathematics and Sciences. Not only that, with the developing technologies we will eventually see and understanding things as they are and we can reassure our belief in the world.

Mr. Choplick notified her mother and the police and told her mother to take her to the police headquarters. A New Jersey juvenile court admitted the evidence, saying that the search of the purse was reasonable under the standard of enforcing school policy and maintaining school discipline. The court found the student, T.L.O., to be a delinquent and sentenced her to a years probation. The typical ego-centric viewpoint of Western education: textbooks, institutions, curriculums, and degrees overshadow the broader sense of this definition. Education captures a wider lens of more than just standardized test scores and the classroom; but interwoven tapestries of ancestral roots, cultural heritage awareness, and life lessons well-learned and passed on to the next generation of Native American boys and girls. To begin with, the branding of ââ¬Ëgender inequalityââ¬â¢ was inapplicable to men and women in various Aboriginal tribes. In fact, they could be described as a kinship with mutual contribution and expectance. Men were responsible for hunting and defense; therefore they were public representatives of their tribes. Women, on the other hand, functioned as the ââ¬Ëbackboneââ¬â¢ of the community, owning the familyââ¬â¢s housing and household goods, farming and gathering of foodstuffs, and even serving as members of the counsel in political matters. Such opportunities and skills were passed down to their offspring, who would be raised as productive members in their collectivist society with a strong cultural heritage and confidence in their identity that promised self-efficacy among the sexes. Teenagers, Computers, and Literacy My sister, Tiffany, is a senior at County High School in Smallville, Ohio, a suburb of Colombus. She is expected by teachers and peers to be able to communicate effectively with the use of computers. Through her daily interactions with the computer due to schoolwork and conversing using Instant Messenger, her literacy practices have been affected. On an average day, Tiffany spends thirty minutes reading on the computer. This includes reading emails, reading information from websites, and reading for homework. For an additional ninety minutes per day, her computer-based reading is devoted to reading responses from her Instant Messenger conversations. This time is also shared with computer-based writing as she types her own responses to her online conversation. She typically spends an additional hour writing on the computer for typing homework, papers, or emails. Tiffany feels that her time spent reading and writing on the computer has affected her literacy in a positive way. She is able to read faster and more efficiently. ââ¬Å"I have learned to type faster and become more aware of what I am typing. Since I have spent a lot of time reading on the computer, it has helped me become a faster reader and helped me learn to skim through trivial information.â⬠This is understandable because with any kind of reading, the more you practice it, the better you become at picking out the main ideas and focusing on the important points. The computer has affected Tiffanyââ¬â¢s writing skills in a positive way. When writing a compositional paper, she is able to utilize the computerââ¬â¢s assets to improve the quality of her writing. The use of the Thesaurus function has made her writings seem more professional. It is much easier to use the Thesaurus function on the computer than having to refer to a book. This works for Tiffany when she is unable to pinpoint the exact word that she is looking for, but it may not work for everyone. She is also able to refer to online resources while writing a research paper. The availability of an online encyclopedia is beneficial when gathering information on a topic. Also, the ability to refer to other Word documents, sometimes notes saved on another file, increases her productivity when writing a paper. With so many positive attributes of the computer, there are also some drawbacks. Tiffany finds that her ability to compose creative writing is hindered because of the computer.
My Desires for and Commitment to a College Education Essay
Thirteen years ago my father came to America with no money or education believing that he would surely make something of himself. With his very low education he received a job washing dishes at a restaurant to put food on his plate and to pay for the one room apartment that he rented. After four years he was able to bring me along with my brother, two sisters and my mother to come stay with him. With all of us together he had to work two jobs to support all of us and that truly was difficult for him. He soon was able to send my mother to a school for adults so she have a diploma and help out with the bills and purchase some new attire for us to wear. Once I saw first hand how hard it was for my parents to survive with their low education my one desire and commitment was focused on my college education and coming from a family with does not receive much income I recognize how important it would be to me to receive my education which is why I will strive to receive it. My sister was also a big influence when I saw her graduate from FAMU with a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree and now is the credit manager of sears. Watching how successful she has become I knew I could do the same by going through any impediments which may stand in my way. After receiving a bachelorââ¬â¢s I will also head for a masterââ¬â¢s to further open my education. As of right now I am currently employed as a student library for the Broward County Main Library in Florida. I was hired because of my integrity, intellectual personality, and my commitment to the job. This job has given me the opportunity to save up some money for college to pay for some of the books and tuition costs. Having this job has made my commitment toward my education the more important to me, as well as giving me a better understanding of hard work and dedication. I now feel confident that I have gained valuable experience with my work however, I now that earning a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree will further enhance the skills I need to work in my field of business. Once in college I will take the courses of Business Administration since Ià have always desired a career that requires innovation, educated risk, and foresight. I learned to respect these qualities from my father through his example I have learned firsthand the advantages and challenges of a person with a low education and a person with a high education -the reward to be gained and the total commitment required. Having a degree in Business Administration would be a significant asset in my account just in case if I were to plan on working for a business which involved management, finance, or marketing. Upon my second year in college I plan to enroll in the track courses of Entrepreneurial Studies. These classes will teach me advanced business techniques and their successful implementation. Ink is an ordinary item but prevalent in everyday use. Ball pens, pent pens, markers and everything that provides ink for its functions are expensive that not all people can afford. That's why the researcher investigated a project that can help lessen the economic crisis for the production of ink. L. Introduction Statement of the problem In school and office, we usually use pent pens and markers.However, the marker inks which we often used are to expensive to buy for a student like me. In times we need it the most, is also the time when we don't have the ink. It is very hassle to go out in the school or office Just to buy a marker ink. The marker ink which we usually used has bad odor that's why it is sometimes bad for our health. Objectives The objective of this project is to create an ink which is easy to produce and to get and also to recycle organic materials. Hypothesis The ink that will be produced will be a little bit pale in color And the product, somehow will have unexpected results.Significance of the study Creating this product will help you create a valuable things out of organic materials that could be found somewhere. Scope and limitations of the study This study covers only mostly about flowers and fruits that could be used to produce ink. However, using other material may not work effectively. Inclusive dates and places of study Gather some yellows flowers and put it in a mortar. Crush it using a pestle then get the extracts. After collecting the extracts, put it in a casserole then put the fire on. Wait until it boils. Add vinegar by the time it boiled. Let it cool for some hour then put it in a clean, empty container. ââ¬ËV. Presentation of data and results The ink we produce is a little bit brownish, because it is made from yello ws flower.Yellows flower doesn't seem to be able to produce dark-colored ink, and as what is expected, it turn out brownish in color. The life of apprehensive individuals has never been an easy one to live, with frequent upheavals of the individualââ¬â¢s and very little sense of control over their lives. Perpetually living around brutality, destruction, and violence links individualââ¬â¢s into obtaining bundles of emotions to a certain extent.From a psychoanalytic point-of-view, war affects society in a way that is painful; the war engenders a deep effect on other individualââ¬â¢s lives as well as their perceptions and obtained views from the devastating experience of the surrounded environment fulfilled with hatred, mischievousness, and depravity. As war increases in brutality to a certain extent, society ââ¬â¢s aspects are intensely affected;this issue can result in the destroying of land, culture, and other tangible aspects.A poem, ââ¬Å"Bitter Strawberriesâ⬠, written by Sylvia Plath, is a sardonic way of describing a war that have occurred in Russia. Horseflies buzzed, paused and stung and the taste of strawberries turned thick and sour. â⬠Why did the taste of strawberries ââ¬Å"turned thick and sour? â⬠Had they tasted thin and sweet before the horseflies stung or perhaps before the subject of the Soviet-American Cold War relations had been broached? The disconnect between the horseflies and the taste of berries is jarring and obstructs any real meaning of and purpose for this three-line versagraph. Certain literary devices were used to convey the meaning of the poem, by catching the readerââ¬â¢s interest.One of the devices that were used in this particular poem was ââ¬Å"Symbolism. â⬠The literary poem contains symbolism because the bitter strawberries displays the overall mood of the Russian society as a whol e. Strawberries are sweet but can lead to bitterness which portrays the atmosphere of the war. The world of Russia was tranquilent and quiet, but when the war occurred it led to bitterness and despair. Imagery was contained in the poem when it states that ââ¬Å"the horseflies buzzed, paused, and stung. Stung is a feeling that was obtained from otherââ¬â¢s in society as if they were actually stung by an insect ,but it was a feeling of pain obtained by the negative atmosphere of war; Sylvia uses horseflies sting as a way of comparing the inflicting pain of an insect to an actual emotion that were felt by others in the poem. ââ¬Å"She stood up a thin commanding figure, in faded dungarees. Businesslike she asked us, ââ¬ËHow many quarts? ââ¬â¢ She recorded the total in her notebook, and we all turned back to picking. â⬠By this point the reader is wondering when the point of it all will be made and how the speaker will tie all the loose ends together.The last stanza: â⠬Å"Kneeling over the rows, we reached among the leaves with quick practiced hands, cupping the berry protectively before snapping off the stem between thumb and forefinger. â⬠The reader will experience a profound disappointment expecting the final stanza to save this piece. Experiencing something that is imposed as being dangerous to society can carry the process of gained perceptions or views of the experience. Part One Katniss wakes up and sees prim her little sister who turned twelve that year was terrified because the day of the reaping was soon and she was old enough to be picked in the reaping curled up to their mother. Katniss gets ready to go hunting in the woods. She must cross an electric fence that is usually not on only in late evening though, she listens to hear the hum of the fence being on but it is silent and good to cross although it is illegal. She gets her bow and arrows from a hollowed log. She looks around for animals and then sees Gale and Gale says ââ¬Å"hey catnipâ⬠. He usually calls her that because he tried to whisper her name to him and he thought she said catnip. They sit down and gale says ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢oh yeah here Happy Hunger Games!â⬠and pulls bread out katniss smells the bread and her mouth waters. A lot of stuff was valuable like fresh, warm, good food was very valuable. Gale says ââ¬Å"we can run off too into the woodâ⬠then Katniss says we have f amily and we wouldnââ¬â¢t make it five miles. They agree, later they leave because they must go to the annual Hunger Games reaping held each year, each district sends one girl and one boy to the annually held Hunger Games, a fight to the death. Katniss and Prim head to the reaping as long as everyone else in the district, Prim starts to cry and katniss tells her ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s okâ⬠. When everybody gets there EffieTrinket wearing a bright dress and a lot of makeup says ââ¬Å"Happy Hunger Games! May the odds be ever in your favorâ⬠. There were two balls one with the boys names and one with the girls names and they were to be randomly picked. When Effie reaches into the girlââ¬â¢s ball and grabs a piece of paper and opens it and reads out Primrose Everdeen. Prim starts to walk up to the stage and then Katniss tries to get her but Peace Keepers hold her back and then she screams ââ¬Å"I volunteerâ⬠. Verbal Irony s Verbal irony is aà trope (or figure of speech) in which the intended meaning of a statement differs from the meaning that the words appear to express. Verbal irony can occur at the level of the individual word or sentence (Nice hair, Bozo), or it may pervade an entire text, as in Jonathan Swifts A Modest Proposal. Jan Swearingen reminds us that Aristotle equated verbal ironyà with understatement and verbal dissemblingthat is with saying or expressing a veiled or guarded version of what one means (Rhetoric and Irony, 1991). The expression verbal irony was first used inà English criticism in 1833 by Bishop Connop Thirlwall in an article on the Greek playwright Sophocles. Examples In [the 1994 movie]à Reality Bites, Winona Ryder, applying for a newspaper job, is stumped when asked to define irony. Itââ¬â¢s a good question. The framework stipulates the roles and duties of a manager in achieving a given task. Some of the important roles that have been identified in clude defining the activities to be achieved, coming up with a plan on how to attain these tasks, monitoring and evaluating performance of the group and reporting the progress to the relevant authorities. The framework spells out the responsibilities of a manager towards the group (Gray, 2010:34). These are to set up and communicate to the members of the group the culture, ethics and aims and objectives of the group. Finally, it spells out the responsibilities of managers for different team members. Managers should understand their team members in terms of skills, personality, strengths, weaknesses and goal. This model concludes that management and leadership are different. Furthermore, good leaders are not necessarily effective mangers but good leaders will have effective management skills. Secondly, there is the management theory of leadership that is commonly referred to as the transactional theory. This model pays close attention to the role of group performance, supervision and organisation. It is based on a system of rewards for outstanding performance and punishments for substandard performance. From the leadership perspective, the relationship between managers and employees is an exchange. Both parties have something to offer. Rules and regulations are important in leadership (Forssell, 2008:78). Employees are not required to be creative or come up with solutions to problems. This stage was the anger stage of Elisabeth Kulber-ross whereby she posited that people experience anger after denial and this anger can come in many forms ââ¬â either anger to oneself, others or anger with the situation (Axelrod, 2006). The third stage of Kulber-ross stage of grief may have been absent in the case of Jobs. He knew that he is dealing with mighty entities like God and therefore, he is not in a position to bargain or ask for concession and neither will God allow him to bargain as equal him only a mortal and a creation. The closest act that Job has done in this stage was to question why God allowed all those bad things to happen to him despit e him being a faithful servant. What Job went through the process in Kulber-ross stage of grief which is prominent in the Biblical account is the depression stage. This understandable because Job, despite his righteousness is still a man and therefore, vulnerable to pain especially when he lost his children and was left with nothing. It would be abnormal if Job did not feel depression when he lost his children just because he loved God. In the end, Job accepted his fate as the will of God and did not lose his faith. This stage is Kulber-ross acceptance stage whereby the grief process has been gone through and now accepting whatever caused the grief (Elizabeth Kubler Ross Grief Cycle model,nd ). This stage is providential to Job when he accepted his fate from God because he proved his faith and all that he lost was given back to him. My process of grieving almost followed Kulber-ross stage of grief with some stage more prominent than the other stage. But there is one thing that was n ot included in Kulber-ross process of grieving, that is my tendency to shut myself out when I do not feel good. I am not necessarily angry just like his stage of anger but would just like to spend time alone to think things over and to get over depression. Sometimes, I want to talk it to with friends just to unburden it off my chest. This stage is not in Kulber-ross but a lot of young people I know do this to deal with grief.
