Do Attitudes Predict Behavior Essay - 1983 Words

This essay will examine the strength of the link between attitudes and behaviour and show that attitudes do not always predict behaviour as there are a number of variables that need to be put in place before the evaluation of a person behaving according to their attitudes can be assessed. These variables will be discussed in some detail. The three component model will be discussed and also attitude formation will be touched upon, before the link between behaviour and attitude can be examined a general understanding of how and why attitudes are formed needs to be addressed. The word attitude is generally a term used to describe the way we perceive and evaluate the social world around us, the way in which we build a positive or negative†¦show more content†¦Affective based attitudes are formed by observing and interacting with others through the process of associative learning, there are two different types of associative learning, implicitly through Classical conditioning or explicitly through instrumental or operant conditioning (Crisp and Turner2007). Classical conditioning involves deciding whether positive or negative regard is felt towards an attitude object that has previously been associated with either a pleasurable or un-pleasurable event (Lord 1997). The second form of associative learning is operant conditioning whereby certain behaviours that are exhibited become strengthened or weakened by either a rewards which is a positive reinforcement or punishment which is a negative reinforcement (Lord 1997). Implicit attitudes are unintentional and somewhat unconscious evaluations that are made, explicit attitudes are attitudes that we are fully conscious and aware of Rather than focus on the feelings and values of an attitude object Cognitive based attitudes focus on the beliefs held about the particular attributes of an attitude object (Crisp and Turner 2007). This type of attitude serves to help us quickly identify a positive or negative response on whether we want something or not (Crisp and Turner 2007).
